SmartBeat is a preventative care and wellness testing program that is paid for in full by insurance.  Except for co-pays, you will not be balance billed for anything.  If you do not have insurance, the cost is $700.  If you pay on the day you are registered for testing, you will receive a 25% discount making the cost $525.

The purpose of the testing is to detect diseases in their early stages so they can be treated before they have the chance to cause permanent, severe damage to your health.

To qualify for testing, you or a family member must have a history of one or more of the following:  high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart attack, stroke.  Obese children whose family members have any of the listed illnesses qualify.

Testing includes an EKG, lung function testing, blood vessel health testing, pictures of the back of your eye that look for glaucoma, early warning of possible stroke, signs of diabetic eye damage, early signs of possible blindness, also lab tests, and ultrasound exams of your carotid (neck) arteries, aorta (the large artery that carries blood to your lower body), and your heart.

The eye test, EKG and ultrasound tests are evaluated by board certified specialists.

About two weeks after undergoing the tests, you will be notified by your provider that the results have arrived and you will be asked to visit with your provider to review the findings.

For anyone who has any abnormality on the tests, insurance will pay for an annual repeat exam.  For anyone who is 100% normal, insurance will pay for a repeat exam every three years.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Please contact your provider to arrange for your testing.  Let’s hope the testing shows that you are healthy.  But not everyone is, and for those who are not, early detection and treatment can significantly reduce the chance of suffering, disability and financial hardship in the near or distant future.
